Penn State Hazleton will hold several events to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 16. Students, faculty and staff have collaborated to plan events that will engage the Penn State Hazleton community in service while encouraging thought-provoking discussion.
The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of English Language Acquisition awarded Penn State a five-year, $2.1 million grant that is intended, among other things, to foster ambitious science and language teaching practices in Hazleton elementary classrooms that contribute to English learners’ academic success.
Marc Anthony Merino Jr. was one of more than 250 students to receive his degree at Penn State Harrisburg’s fall 2016 commencement ceremony on Dec. 17. He received a bachelor of science in criminal justice from the School of Public Affairs, with a minor in psychological science. It was a moment of triumph for Merino; it was also a moment that almost didn’t happen.
Graduates of Penn State Hazleton’s Practical Nursing program marked the successful completion of the program during a ceremony Dec. 20 in the Dr. Thomas M. Caccese Gymnasium in the Physical Education Building. Twenty-four students completed the requirements to earn a certificate in practical nursing and will be eligible to test for the National Council Licensure Examination-Practical Nurses.
Applications for the Penn State Secondary Mathematics Noyce Scholarship Program must be submitted by Jan. 18, 2017. The competitive renewable scholarships will provide $19,000 per year for eligible students’ last two years of college.
The Greater Hazleton Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association will host photos with Santa Claus and the Nittany Lion from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 7 in Harlam Lounge in Pasco L. Schiavo Hall at the campus.
Sixteen faculty members representing various campuses, colleges, and General Education areas at Penn State, have been named General Education Faculty Fellows. The General Education Faculty Fellows Program is a new initiative of the recently created Office for General Education.
