Penn State Hazleton to hold day of events for community Oct. 7

The public is invited to Community Day at Penn State Hazleton from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7. The event is a chance for the Hazleton community to visit the campus for a variety of free events and demonstrations.

Community Day celebrates the relationship between Penn State Hazleton and the local community, showcases the resources of the campus and the University, and brings attention to the talents of local groups as well as those of campus students, faculty and staff. Community Day is planned and overseen by the Penn State Hazleton Council, the campus advisory board, and members of the Greater Hazleton Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association.

The event features activities for all ages, including entertainment, food and historical and educational components.

The schedule of events and their locations is as follows:

Noon to 4 p.m.

Free scoops of one of three Penn State Berkey Creamery ice cream flavors -- chocolate, vanilla or Peachy Paterno -- on the campus mall.

Pickup for pre-ordered half gallons of Penn State Berkey Creamery ice cream in freezer truck on campus mall. No additional half gallons will be sold.

Concessions sales such as hot dogs, chips and soda; campus mall.

Photos with the Nittany Lion; campus mall. Those wanting to get photos should bring their own camera or smartphone.

Campus bookstore will be open and selling a variety of Penn State-themed merchandise and pre-signed copies of the Nittany Lion book series. Author Denise Kaminsky will be on hand to sign copies of her children’s “Nittany Lion” series books, which will also be for sale.

Educational exhibits, Pocono Greyhound Adoption, PawsAbilities puppies in training and Penn State Master Gardeners on the campus mall.

Children’s mini pumpkin painting with the Hazleton Art League on the campus mall. Parents must accompany their children.

Tie-dye shirt making on the campus mall. Parents must accompany their children.

Make your own mini fish tank with live fish provided on the campus mall. Parents must accompany their children.

Admission and financial aid information station, campus mall.

Alumni group information stations with details about the Penn State Hazleton Alumni Chapter and Society, campus mall.

Continuing Education exhibits with information on classes and seminars along with health and education stations with faculty and students in the practical nursing program; campus mall.

DJ Bob Tier playing music and providing entertainment; campus mall.

12:15 to 1:15 p.m.

Basketball clinic, run by basketball coaches with student player volunteers, in the Thomas M. Caccese Gymnasium, Physical Education Building.

1:15 and 2:45 p.m.

Penn State Hazleton cheerleaders giving demonstrations; campus mall.

1:30-2:15 p.m.

Basketball foul shooting contest for all ages with prizes; Thomas M. Caccese Gymnasium in the Physical Education Building.

1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 p.m.

Campus tours led by student Lion Ambassadors; meet on campus mall.

1:45 to 2:15 p.m.

Cheerleading clinic with campus cheerleaders; lobby of the Evelyn Graham Academic Building.

2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Recreation stations with the athletics department and student-athletes providing various recreational activities, soccer field.

3 to 3:45 p.m.

Live cooking show, demonstration by Penn State Hazleton chef with samples for participants, in the Evelyn Graham Academic Building lobby.

The Mary M. and Bertil E. Lofstrom Library will be open throughout Community Day with information about plans for its renovation that will start next summer.

All activities will be held rain or shine, with most outdoor events moved indoors to the Graham, Butler and Physical Education buildings in inclement weather.

Accessible parking with transportation on golf carts is available in the lot outside the Physical Education Building.
