Penn State Hazleton, Geisinger to host free 'STOP THE BLEED' training

The one-and-a-half hour training will provide education on proper bleed management and tourniquet use in emergency medical situations to improve the care of patients prior to hospitalization.

HAZLETON, Pa. — Penn State University Police and Public Safety (UPPS), in partnership with Geisinger Trauma Services, will host a free "STOP THE BLEED" training course, open to all faculty, staff and students, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 5, in Room 103 of the Charles T. Butler Teaching and Learning Resource Center.

The one-and-a-half hour training will provide education on proper bleed management and tourniquet use in emergency medical situations to improve the care of patients prior to hospitalization. The course is comprised of discussion, demonstration, and hands-on training for using direct pressure, gauze packing, dressings and tourniquets. All attendees will be provided with a potentially life-saving kit that includes an instructional booklet, tourniquet and other supportive materials.

“University Police is pleased to bring 'STOP THE BLEED' training to Penn State Hazleton in partnership with Geisinger Trauma Services,” said University Police Sgt. James Joos. “The lessons learned, and tools provided in the course, are ones that could potentially save a life in the case of an emergency medical situation and serve as yet another means in which community members can help protect and serve one another if and when the need arises.”

No previous experience is required to attend the training. The course is provided at no cost to all Penn State faculty, staff and students. Registration is required as space is limited.
