Received Affection and Caregiving in the Grandparent-Grandchild Relationship
National Communication Association
Salt Lake City, UT
Grounded in Affection Exchange Theory’s assumptions that affectionate communication fosters relational benefits and increases people’s likelihood of survival, this study sought to examine young adult grandchildren’s willingness to serve as their grandparents’ caregivers as a function of received affection from their grandparents. Young adult grandchildren (N = 209) independently completed a questionnaire in reference to a specific, biological grandparent. The results of a hierarchical multiple regression analysis revealed partial support for the hypothesized positive relationships between grandchildren’s received affection from their grandparents and the grandchildren’s willingness to care for their grandparents. These findings are indicative of both practical and theoretical implications.

Instructor Credibility Mediates the Relationship Between Instructor Misbehaviors and Students’ Willingness to Express Academic Performance Concern to Their Instructors
International Communication Association
Prague, Czech Republic
This study sought to advance our understanding of the centrality of instructor credibility in the student-instructor relationship. Specifically, we tested nine different mediation models in which the three dimensions of instructor credibility (i.e., competence, caring, and trustworthiness) served as mediators, the three dimensions of instructor misbehaviors (i.e., antagonism, lectures, and articulation) served as the antecedents, and students’ willingness to express academic performance concern to their instructors served as the consequent. The results of correlational analyses and mediation analyses using PROCESS 2.16 largely supported the hypothesized relationships among the variables examined in this study, and our predictions that instructor credibility would mediate the relationship between instructor misbehaviors and students’ willingness to express academic performance concern to their instructors.

Eastern Communication Association Annual Meeting

This case study examines the treatment and evaluation of a gay male student in a basic Public Speaking course. As a part of the course requirements, students were asked to deliver a speech about a culture other than their own. The student’s request to speak about transgenderism was denied by the instructor, who openly claimed to be homophobic, even though the student was not a part of the transgenderism culture. Faculty training and departmental implications are discussed.

Relational Maintenance Behaviors and Relational Characteristics in The Advisor-Advisee Mentoring Relationship
National Communication Association Annual Meeting
Orlando, FL
To extend extant mentoring and relational maintenance research, the purpose of this study was to examine the role of relational characteristics (i.e., liking, communication satisfaction, relational satisfaction, trust, work commitment, and control mutuality) in the context of advisor-advisee mentoring relationships. Doctoral students (N = 378) and faculty advisors (N = 141) completed a series of questionnaires. The results of Pearson correlational analyses largely supported the hypotheses. In both the advisee and advisor samples, advisors’ provision of mentoring support generally was related positively to relational characteristics, which in turn was related positively to advisees’ use of relational maintenance behaviors with their advisors. These findings not only emphasize the importance of advisors’ provision of mentoring support, but also advisees’ communicative attempts to sustain their advisor-advisee mentoring relationships.

Examining relationships between instructors’ emotional expression and student learning outcome
National Communication Association Annual Meeting
Orlando, FL
This study examines the relationships between instructors’ emotional expression in the classroom and student learning outcomes. Students (N = 154) rated both the frequency and intensity of their instructors’ emotional expression of 10 fundamental emotions, as well as self-reports of cognitive learning, affective learning, motivation, and satisfaction. Results of Pearson correlations revealed that interest and happiness were positively related to student learning outcomes. Student motivation was related negatively to instructor disgust, shame, and anger. Student satisfaction and affective learning were related negatively to instructor disgust, anger, shame, contempt, sadness, guilt, and fear. Student cognitive learning was negatively related to instructor disgust, shame, anger, and fear. Post-hoc regressions revealed significant models for instructors’ emotional expression for all learning outcomes; disgust was a significant predictor of both motivation and affect for the instructor; anger was a significant predictor of satisfaction; and interest was a significant predictor of both affect for behaviors recommended in the course and affect for the course.

Mentoring Matters
