Medical Terminology Course Description
Medical Terminology introduces students to the language of healthcare through a systematic study of medical word building. The course focuses on the use of prefixes, root words and suffixes to help students develop the extensive vocabulary required in today’s healthcare professions. Emphasis is placed on correct pronunciation, spelling and practical usage of medical terms commonly encountered in clinical and administrative settings.
Students gain a foundational understanding of anatomy, physiology and pathology as they relate to medical terminology. No prior knowledge of health sciences is required.
Medical Terminology course outcomes
By the end of this 12-hour course (6 contact hours), students will be able to:
- Analyze and construct medical terms using prefixes, root words and suffixes
- Pronounce and spell medical terms accurately
- Interpret medical terminology related to major body systems
- Apply medical vocabulary in healthcare-related communication
- Recognize basic concepts of anatomy, physiology and disease processes
