Welcome to Residence Life!
Penn State Hazleton’s Office of Residence Life works closely with University Park’s Office of Residence Life and Penn State Hazleton’s Office of Student Affairs to provide a positive experience for students choosing to live on campus. Residence Life work is supported by four professional staff members, including an associate director, two residence life coordinators, and the administrative support assistant. Additionally, Residence Life is also supported by the efforts of Resident Assistants (RAs), a small team of paraprofessional student leaders who live within the residential community. Together these staff members work to support residential students in a variety of ways.
Some of the designated interactions of Residence Life staff with students include:
- Community engagement
Professional staff members and resident assistants develop and facilitate activities that allow students to interact with one another and develop a living community. - Co-curricular learning
Professional staff members design activities that intentionally target the intended learning outcomes of our residential curriculum. - Leadership development
Residence Life coordinators advise the Association for Residence Hall Students, a student organization focused on providing a voice for students to improve the residential experience. By functioning similarly to a hall council and a programming board, students who participate in this group gain valuable leadership skills that they can use in the future. Additionally, Residence Life selects a small group of students each year to serve as resident assistants within the halls. These students participate in a three-credit course to develop multicultural and interpersonal competencies, helping and mediation skills, and other leadership skills that can be used in the resident assistant position and beyond. - Roommate relationship development
Our staff will work with students who have roommates to help them develop relationships and navigate any potential conflicts that may arise from sharing a living space. Staff trained in mediation can be a resource for students who may struggle to find a resolution on their own. - Crisis response and resource referral
Residence Life staff members often serve as an immediate resource for students due to their presence within the residential community. By contacting a Residence Life staff member, students can receive timely care in emergencies and referrals to other campus and community resources for follow up support and care. - Policy and conduct referrals
Our department uses both proactive and remedial methods for addressing concerns as they relate to residence hall policy and the student code of conduct, as the behavior of our students has an effect on the entire community. The procedures used by these professionals are in accordance with the Office of Student Conduct.
