Weather Cancellations
Announcements: The announcement of any of three closure or delay options at Penn State Hazleton will be made on the following timetable:
- Morning class decisions will be made by 6:00 a.m. and communicated through various communication channels (text alert, website, social media, etc.) to students, faculty and staff.
- Evening class decisions will be made by 2:00 p.m. and communicated through various communication channels to students, faculty and staff.
Snow Policy
Driving in inclement weather: The greater Hazleton area can have some challenging driving conditions at times. While we all have a dedication to providing classes, labs, and other experiences for our students, it is important to understand that no faculty or staff member is expected to put their life in jeopardy to get to campus. Personal safety and the ability to come to campus will be left to the individual. Faculty should extend the same consideration to their students.
Options For Closing or Delay
Compressed schedule
The campus is open and classes run on a pre-announced, compressed schedule. This allows the highways or campus to be cleared, allowing most people to come to campus. Faculty, staff and students should make every attempt to be present, although none should be expected to risk their lives. Faculty who are not able to reach campus should take responsibility to notify their students and contact the Academic Affairs office 570-450-3138. Staff should come to work at the usual starting time unless the announcement asks them to delay. View Compressed Schedule meeting times.
Classes cancelled
Classes are not held, but campus offices and services remain open and available. Employees report to work if they are able. The issue here is keeping campus services open and available for students who are on campus and for the public. Employees should come as able, as on the compressed schedule. Staff who are unable to come to the campus will need to count these days as vacation or personal time (a University policy).
Campus closed
No classes are held, only essential employees report and only essential services are available. Under this condition, essential employees report to the campus. These employees are individually notified in advance that they are essential and receive compensatory time for the hours they work when the campus is closed.
