Penn State student organizations and units at campuses across the Commonwealth will be holding events in honor of Black History Month. Here’s a look at some of the events taking place at the University’s campuses during the month of February.
Every year, an exceptional mentor and women who have shown remarkable professionalism and leadership at Penn State are recognized with two awards: the Rosemary Schraer Mentoring Award and the Achieving Women Award. Nominations are currently being sought for both of these awards; the deadline is Feb. 12.
Penn State Hazleton will host a chamber music concert beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 11. The performance by the Helton-Thomas Duo will be held in the Slusser/Bayzick Black Box Theater and is free and open to the public.
Charlie Karchner has attended THON for 16 years, and has even been on the floor of the 46-hour dance marathon. But this year will bring a whole new THON experience for him as he takes on the role of dancer. Karchner is a survivor of acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and he and his family were supported by THON while he underwent treatment.
B. Douglas Edmonds, assistant professor of physics at Penn State Hazleton, was part of a team of researchers to win a second prize in an annual cosmology competition.
On Saturday, February 9, Mckenzie Prutsman cemented herself as one of the all-time greats in Penn State Hazleton Athletics history when she notched her 1,785th career point to become the all-time leading scorer at the campus.
On Saturday, May 18, eight Penn State organizations will co-sponsor the 10th annual Penn State Day at Knoebels Amusement Park in Elysburg. Registration will begin at 10 a.m. at Pavilion M. A program will begin at 11 a.m. and will include lunch, a performance by the Alumni Blue Band, an appearance by the Nittany Lion, and prize raffles.
Penn State Hazleton contributed $36.4 million to the Pennsylvania economy in FY 2017, and supported, directly and indirectly, 558 Pennsylvania jobs. A new study, released Feb. 26 by Penn State, focused on measuring the University’s impact in communities across the Commonwealth.
