Community Day to be held Oct. 16 at Penn State Hazleton

HAZLETON, Pa. — Penn State Hazleton will host Community Day, an opportunity for the Greater Hazleton community to visit the campus, from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 16. Sponsored by the Penn State Hazleton Council, the campus advisory board, Community Day is free and open to everyone.

Community Day is designed to celebrate the relationship between Penn State Hazleton and the local community, showcase the resources of the campus and the University, and bring attention to the talents of local groups as well as those of campus students, faculty and staff. The event involves planning and participation by students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the campus.

The event is suitable for all ages, featuring entertainment and fun, historical and educational components, and food and refreshments.

Activities planned during Community Day include tours of the scenic 125-acre campus, horse and carriage rides, a cooking demonstration by a Penn State chef, children’s activities and presentations by several community groups.

Free scoops of ice cream from the famous Penn State Berkey Creamery will be available for tasting, and half gallons of ice cream can be pre-ordered and picked up during Community Day. To order ice cream, visit the Community Day page. Orders will be accepted through Sept. 16 and must be paid in advance. Proceeds from the sale benefit THON.

Various food and refreshment items will be available for sale and the campus bookstore will be open, selling a variety of Penn State merchandise and memorabilia.

A Coach and Vera Bradley bingo will be held to benefit THON, Penn State’s dance marathon that raises money to fight childhood cancer. A basket raffle and artwork raffle that day will also benefit THON. Tickets for the bingo, which are $25, can be purchased in advance from the Office of Student Affairs, 105 Butler, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday or at the door the day of the event.

Attendees are welcome to bring cameras to take photos with the Nittany Lion at the Nittany Lion statue on campus.

A complete schedule of events will be announced in the coming weeks. Community Day will be held rain or shine, with most outdoor events moved indoors in inclement weather.
