Water line repair information - update

12:05 p.m., Saturday, February 22 

South Hall water line repair is completed, and water service has been restored. 

9:30 a.m., Friday, February 21

The water line repair for South Hall will resume on Saturday, February 22.
Water service will be turned off at 8:00 a.m.
The repair is anticipated to take 6-12 hours.

The Physical Education Building will open at 10:30 a.m.

South Hall Residence Life staff and R.A.s will be apprised of progress and will keep students informed.

The project only affects South Hall. The Highacres Cafe and North and West Halls are operating normally.

7:15 p.m., Thursday, February 20

The water for South Hall will be turned on at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, February 20. The water line repair will continue on Saturday, February 22. Details to follow.

Students residing in South Hall may contact R.A.s or Residence Life staff for additional information.

12:05 p.m., Thursday, February 20

The water line repair has been isolated and only affects students in South Hall. 

Water service to South Hall will be shut off at 2:30 p.m. today. It is estimated that the repair will take 6 to 12 hours. Students are asked to avoid the rear area of South Hall while the repairs are taking place.

The Highacres Cafe and Higher Grounds Coffee Shop will operate under normal hours.

Students residing in South Hall may contact R.A.s or Residence Life staff for additional information.


9:45 a.m., Thursday, February 20

Important message to resident students

The water line repair is ongoing.

The campus Emergency Response Team will meet at noon today to discuss plans for the continuation of the project.

Water service will be interrupted as the project progresses, but every attempt will be made to minimize the inconvenience to students.

10:15 p.m., Wed., Feb. 19 - Water service is restored to campus buildings.

Starting at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 19, a broken water line running behind the residence halls will be repaired. The water supply to all three residence halls (North, South and West) and the dining hall (Highacres Café) will be turned off until repairs are completed.

The repair is anticipated to take no more than 6 to 12 hours, however the extent of the job will not be known until the area is excavated.

This project affects only the lower part of the campus, not the upper campus where academic buildings, the library and physical education building are located. Classes will continue as scheduled.

Resident Assistants (R.A.s) have met with on-campus students to brief them on the project. Residence Life staff and R.A.s will be on duty during the repair and will receive updates which will be disseminated to students.

Plans are in place to meet the needs of resident students.
These include:
- free bottled water will be available for students to brush their teeth and drink
- shower facilities will be available in the Physical Education Building until
- portable toilets will be available near the residence halls.

To feed the students:
- Highacres Café will serve a limited entrée until 6:00 p.m., and then will serve only “grab and go” items, bottled beverages, and retail items until 10:00 p.m.
- Higher Grounds Coffee Shop, located in Butler, will remain open until 10:00 p.m. and will serve macaroni and cheese, hot dogs and soup as part of the campus meal plan, along with the usual gourmet sandwiches and baked goods.

Activities for students:
- The pool will be open from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. with free music, drinks and snacks.
- The Penn State Hazleton women's basketball playoff game at Penn State Beaver will be live streamed in the upper lounge area of Butler. Student Affairs also will be selling discount movie tickets.
- R.A.s will host a movie in Higher Grounds Coffee Shop in the evening.
- Library will be open until 10:00 p.m.
